PSE&G's Building Decarbonization incentives are the biggest close-rate ammo in the state — up to $10,000 (or 50% of project cost) for full heat-pump conversions, up to $5,000 for dual-heat setups, plus decommissioning ($2,000), re-ducting ($2,000), and electrical-upgrade support, with 0% APR financing up to $25,000. A CSR who can say "there's up to five figures of utility money and zero-interest financing on this job" is selling a different product than one quoting a bare price.
Atlantic City Electric: heat pumps up to $1,300. JCP&L: $500–$1,000. Know which utility the caller has before the visit — it changes the pitch.
The catch that's also a moat: most of this money requires participating-contractor status and Manual J load calculations. Shops that get approved and build the paperwork into their process own a sales weapon their competitors literally cannot quote. That setup is an ops project — the kind we run.
The Compliance Angle
Local Rules That Cost Money
New Jersey requires HIC registration with the Division of Consumer Affairs, and HVACR and plumbing work require state trade licenses — NJ is stricter than PA. Every fully-licensed shop that doesn't display "NJ HIC #13VHxxxxxxx" on estimates, trucks, and review replies is leaving trust on the table in a state where the registration number is legally required on contracts anyway.
