How Often Business Hours Online Don't Match, and What It Costs
Wrong hours on Google or a website are among the most common errors in a small business's online presence, and they cost more than an awkward moment at a locked door, because many customers who arrive to find a business closed never try it again.
At a glance
- In osNOVA's 2026 audit of 68 independent Philadelphia salon websites, only 18, or 26%, listed hours that matched the salon's own Google listing; roughly one in five listed no hours at all.
- Earlier measured studies found the same problem elsewhere: 61% of 259 independent UK businesses had inaccurate or missing hours online, and 24% of U.S. consumers surveyed had arrived somewhere too early or too late because of wrong hours online.
- For an illustrative business where six people a month act on wrong hours, the first-year spending of the customers who never come back adds up to about $13,600.
The number and where it comes from
The clearest current figure comes from osNOVA's Front Door Audit, which in October 2026 compared the hours on each salon's website with the hours on its Google Business Profile for 68 independent Philadelphia hair salons with working websites. Only 18 matched, which means that 50 of the 68 salons either showed a different schedule on the two pages or left hours off the website entirely, and some sites disagreed with themselves, with one schedule in the footer and another on the booking page. An earlier osNOVA pilot of 18 salons found an even lower rate, with only 3 of 18 matching.
The few measured studies from outside osNOVA are older, and we cite them because they checked listings against reality rather than asking owners. In 2017 the UK domain registry Nominet compared online listings for 259 independent British businesses with their actual opening times, confirmed by phone or visit, and found that 61% had inaccurate hours online or none at all; in a companion survey of 2,003 UK consumers, 63% said they would never return to an independent business after arriving to find it closed when its online listing said it was open. A 2018 survey of 1,025 U.S. consumers by BrightLocal, a local-marketing software company, found that 24% had arrived at a business too early or too late in the previous year because its hours online were wrong, and 51% said incorrect hours online made them lose trust in a business.
| Study | What was checked | Hours wrong, missing or mismatched |
|---|---|---|
| osNOVA Front Door Audit, Philadelphia, 2026 | 68 salon websites against their own Google listing | 74% (50 of 68) |
| osNOVA pilot, Philadelphia, 2026 | 18 salon websites against their own Google listing | 83% (15 of 18) |
| Nominet, UK, 2017 | 259 independent businesses' online listings against actual opening times | 61% |
Google gives owners the tools to prevent most of this. Its Business Profile help pages describe separate settings for regular hours, special hours for holidays and short closures, and "more hours" for services that keep different times, such as delivery or senior hours, and they advise confirming hours for official holidays even when they match the regular schedule.
A worked calculation
| People per month who arrive or call during hours the listing gets wrong (Assumption) | 6 |
|---|---|
| Share who never come back (Cited benchmark: Nominet consumer survey, UK, 2017) | 63% |
| Customers lost per year (Calculated (6 Γ 12 Γ 63% = 45.4)) | 45 |
| First-year spending per customer (Assumption (for example, five visits at $60)) | $300 |
| First-year spending lost (Calculated (6 Γ 12 Γ 63% Γ $300)) | $13,608 |
Illustrative example; replace every assumption with your own numbers. The 63% figure is what consumers said they would do, which may overstate what they actually do.
The cost is likely to fall hardest on new customers, because a regular already knows the business and its people, while a first-timer has no reason to give the business a second chance and two or three other listings to choose from on the same screen.
The widget for the site
A lean widget beside Exhibit 2 would carry two sliders, for people per month who act on wrong hours and for first-year spending per customer, and one result showing the yearly cost at the 63% rate. The most useful input is often the first one, and the front desk can estimate it by noting each time someone says Google said you were open.
How you compare
- Against the salon audit: if your website hours and Google hours match exactly, including holidays, you are already ahead of nearly three in four of the Philadelphia salons studied.
- Against your own listings: put the website, Google Business Profile, booking app, social profiles and any directory listings side by side, and count how many disagree.
- Against last month: check again after every schedule change, holiday or staff change that affects opening times, since mismatches usually begin with a change made in one place only.
