The FAQ Page That Answers What Customers Are Already Searching
A useful FAQ page is built from the questions customers already ask your front desk and type into search, answered in two or three plain sentences with real numbers, and arranged in the order a customer meets them, before, during and after the service.
The best small business FAQ page answers the 10 to 15 questions your customers actually ask, about price, timing, preparation, policies and what happens afterward, with specific answers rather than "it depends." Collect the questions from your own messages, reviews and search results for two weeks, then group them by when in the journey the customer asks them.
Where to find the questions
1. The front desk and inbox. Keep a tally for two weeks of every question asked by text, email, chat or at the counter, and star the ones asked more than twice.
2. Your reviews and your competitors' reviews. Look for sentences that start with "I wish I'd known" or "I wasn't sure."
3. Search results. Type your main service and town into Google and note the questions in the "People also ask" box.
4. Google Search Console. If your site is connected, the Performance report shows the searches, including questions, that people typed before they reached your pages.
The FAQ template to copy
| When the customer asks | Question | How to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Before: choosing | How much does [service] cost? | A starting price or range and what changes it |
| Before: choosing | Do you serve [area] / take [insurance plan]? | A list, not "call to ask" |
| Before: choosing | How soon can I get in? | Your usual lead time and how to get the next opening |
| Before: booking | How do I book, and do you need a deposit? | The booking link, the deposit amount and when it is refunded |
| Before: booking | What is your cancellation policy? | The notice required and the fee, in one sentence |
| During: preparing | How should I prepare? | What to bring, wear or do, and how early to arrive |
| During: the visit | How long does it take? | A time range for the most common services |
| During: the visit | Who will do the work? | Roles, licenses and how to request someone |
| After: paying | What payment methods do you accept? | A list, including financing or memberships |
| After: the result | What if I'm not happy with the result? | Your fix or redo policy and how long it applies |
| After: coming back | How often should I come back? | The usual interval, such as every [amount] weeks |
| After: coming back | Do you offer memberships, packages or reminders? | What is included and how to sign up |
Writing rules: lead with the answer in the first sentence, use numbers instead of adjectives ("about 45 minutes," not "a short visit"), keep each answer under 60 words, link to the booking or policy page where it helps and put a "Last updated [month, year]" line at the bottom.
Why it works
Most customers try to answer their own questions before they contact a business. A study in Harvard Business Review, drawing on the authors' customer research across industries, found that 81% of customers attempt to take care of matters themselves before reaching out to a live representative, so an FAQ page that holds the real answers serves the majority who will never ask.
Write the page for people, not for search snippets. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in its search listings in May 2026, so the value of the page now comes from answering questions clearly enough that customers book and arrive prepared, and from giving search engines and AI tools plain, accurate text to draw on.
