What 100 Philadelphia Salon Websites Reveal About Winning and Keeping Clients

We checked what a client can see online for 100 independent Philadelphia hair salons, from booking and prices to hours and policies, and found that most do a decent job of getting someone in the chair and very little to bring them back.

At a glance

• A salon's front door is everything a new client can see before walking in: the website, the Google listing and the booking page. We scored 100 independent Philadelphia salons on nine parts of it in October 2026.
• The decision starts online. People judge a web page's appeal in about 50 milliseconds, and 82% of U.S. adults read online ratings or reviews before buying something for the first time.
• Nearly a third have no working website of their own. Of the 99 we could verify, 19 have none, 8 point to a dead or placeholder web address and 4 rely only on a booking app's page.
• Booking is easy; coming back isn't. Of the 68 salons with working sites, 72% let clients book or request a time online, but only 19% give any reason to return, such as a membership or package.
• Only 26% list hours that match their own Google listing, and close to half of the sites we examined in detail had a broken button, visible error, placeholder text or wrong contact detail.
• The best salons are easy to copy. Clear first-visit guides, free consults booked online and plain-language policies cost little to set up, and only a minority of salons have them.

Why the front door matters

Many new clients meet a salon on a phone screen before they meet anyone in person. In a study published in Behaviour & Information Technology, people rated web pages they saw for just 50 milliseconds, a twentieth of a second, and their snap judgments of visual appeal closely matched what they decided after a longer look. Credibility follows looks as well: in a Stanford study of 2,684 people judging real websites, design and layout came up more than anything else, in 46.1% of comments.

Reviews and listings set expectations before the website does. Pew Research Center found in 2016 that 82% of U.S. adults at least sometimes read online ratings or reviews before buying something for the first time, and 40% always or almost always do, so the salon a client finally calls has usually been compared with several others first.

We organized the audit around those five questions, scoring each salon on whether its website, Google listing and booking page answer them for a stranger.

Who has a front door at all

Picture someone new to a Philadelphia neighborhood, searching for a haircut on a Sunday night. Before they ever call, they look at three things: whether the salon's site loads, whether they can see what it costs and whether they can book. For nearly a third of the salons we checked, that search ends at the first step.

Who's counted: 100 salons sampled → 99 verified → 68 with a working website, scored on nine items → 50 of those checked fact by fact for broken links, contact details and policies.

The missing sites are not all from salons that never built one. Eight had a web address that no longer works: placeholder pages that still say "coming soon," hosting services that have shut down and, in two cases, addresses that now lead to unrelated websites, which suggests the domain lapsed and someone else took it over. A salon whose Google listing still points to one of those addresses is sending new clients somewhere it doesn't control.

Another four salons have no site of their own but do have a booking-app page, such as GlossGenius or Booksy. Several of those pages are excellent, with prices, durations and deposit rules, but they rarely show up when someone searches the salon's name, so they work best as a booking tool behind a simple website rather than a replacement for one.

Booking is common, coming back is rare

Among the 68 salons with working websites, the first steps of the client's journey are mostly in place: 78% show prices and 72% let someone book or request a time online. Phorest is the most common booking app, followed by Vagaro and Square, while 18 of the 68 sites link no booking app at all.

The picture changes once the first visit is over. Only 13 of the 68 sites mention a membership, package, loyalty reward or rebooking incentive, and only 17 offer any way to stay in touch, such as an email list, a text signup or a client account. For a business whose income depends on clients returning every six to ten weeks, that is the part of the journey left most to chance.

The gap matters because the habits that bring clients back are cheap. A Cochrane review of seven randomized trials found that text reminders raised attendance at booked appointments by 14%, and offering the next appointment with a specific date and time before a client leaves turns an intention into a plan.

The small breaks that cost bookings

Most of what we found wrong takes minutes to fix, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed: the owner rarely visits their own website the way a stranger does.

Hours are the most common gap. Only 18 of the 68 salon sites list hours that match their Google listing, and roughly one in five list no hours at all. Some sites disagree with themselves, showing one schedule in the footer and another on the booking page, so a client who arrives at the time Google promised can find the door locked.

Close to half of the sites we examined in detail had something visibly broken. Of the 50 sites we checked fact by fact, 22 had a button that went nowhere, an error message on the page, placeholder text or contact details that didn't match the salon's other listings. Among the examples:

• "Book now" buttons that link to an empty page or to nothing at all.
• A phone link still set to the website template's sample number.
• Leftover filler text, and prices on a services page marked "coming soon."
• Newsletter signup boxes showing a website-builder error instead of a form.
• Social media icons linking to the website builder's own accounts rather than the salon's.

Old notices linger. Four sites still show COVID-era rules or consent forms, and four have footers dated 2022 or earlier, one as far back as 2013. Three sites list a different phone number from their Google listing, two list no phone number at all and two show a different street address, which usually means a move that never reached every listing.

Policies are common but uneven. Of the 50 sites checked in detail, 32 state how much notice they need for a cancellation, most often 24 hours, sometimes 48 and once 72. Fewer explain what a first visit is like, so the policy often reads as a warning rather than as part of a welcome.

A stated policy protects the salon's time, but it works best beside the reason for it and a reminder a day or two ahead, since a client who knows the rule and gets a nudge is far less likely to need it.

What the best salons do

No salon scored a perfect 9; the three highest reached 7. What set the strongest apart was rarely expensive technology. It was a handful of thoughtful pages and habits, each aimed at a moment when a client might hesitate.

The best front doors answer a nervous new client's questions before they have to ask them.

How the salons compare

Scored together, the salons cluster in the middle. Half of the 68 working sites scored 4 or 5 of 9, while 15 scored 2 or lower, which usually means a site that offers a gallery and a phone number and little else.

That middle is crowded and getting more so. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 670,800 barbers, hairstylists and cosmetologists in the U.S. and projects 7% growth over the next decade, much faster than the average occupation, with nearly half of hairstylists working for themselves.

As more chairs open, a front door that answers all five questions becomes one of the clearest ways to be chosen, and most of the gaps in this audit take an afternoon of edits rather than a new website.

• Tap every button on your homepage and booking page, and fix any that go nowhere.
• Check that your web address still works, and that your Google listing points to it.
• Add a short "before your first visit" note: how long, how to arrive, what to bring and your cancellation policy.
• Offer one reason to come back, such as a package, membership or a free clean-up between visits.
• Turn on text reminders in your booking app, and offer the next appointment before clients pay.

About this research

On October 12, 2026, osNOVA reviewed 100 independent hair salons drawn from the top Google Maps results in more than a dozen Philadelphia neighborhoods, excluding chains and franchises. We checked only what any visitor can see: websites, Google listings and the first screen of booking pages, with no calls, forms or bookings. One salon's site could not be verified, leaving 99. Sixty-eight had working websites and were scored on nine items; replies to Google reviews were not scored in this round. Fifty of those sites were also checked fact by fact for broken links, contact details and policies. Because the sample favors well-ranked salons, the true share of salons with these gaps across the city is likely higher.
